Well at first, you need to have links to your site on forums, signatures...
and so on... But on sites that have a lot of visites, a lot of visites means that google is indexing their page almost every day.
Google search engine bot if run on link to your page while indexing site, will going to check and index your page too.
There is an option on manual submiting your page to google and other search engines. www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
If you wont for google to dont index some parts of your site ( or whole site ) use robots.txt http://www.google.com/webmasters/faq.html
but you can put blank robots.txt on your page, becouse thats the first thing that google ( and any other search engine ) check is that robots.txt
to submit, you dont need to manualu add url to search engine, just post here ( and put link to your page in signature ) and eventualy youll going to get added.
