How To Make Ff Extensions?

I'm interested in creating a Firefox extension or two, but I have no idea where to start. I know that you can 'unzip' the files and they contain java script and xul (whatever xul is.. I have some reading to do lol) but that's it. The only tutorial I found was based on FF 0.9 or something and that seems a bit out dated and when loading the examples there are errors. Any extension developers out there? Where do I start? I have a teeny bit of programming experience and I'm learning Javascript right now, I thought it'd be a good way to apply what I learn in javascript by making some simple FF extensions.
